One of the most common reasons to visit us is to help them lose weight.  On a rare occasion, this person might be doing everything wrong and the solution is simple.  In these cases, weight falls off easily once we normalize their diet and get them exercising appropriately.  However, for the vast majority of people that visit our office this is not the case.  Many people are already doing all the ‘right’ things.  They are completing intense workouts multiple times per week, eating only whole foods, and restricting their calories.  Despite doing all of these things they are unable to lose weight and in some cases are actually gaining weight.  These are the cases that we specialize in addressing.  They are a bit more complicated then just assigning a set amount of macros and calories to follow.  In most of these cases the obstacle that is hindering weight loss is inflammation.

Inflammation is not a new term to most people.  In our bodies, inflammation is actually a GOOD thing as it helps to repair damaged tissue and fight any foreign invaders.  However, for many people, this inflammatory process never shuts off.  When this happens there is a constant fire burning inside your body that over time will begin to cause its own damage.  This state of constant inflammation will disrupt your body’s normal functions and make weight loss almost impossible.  If you are lucky enough to lose some weight, it is almost certainly going to come back unless the inflammation is addressed.   

The biggest question that needs to be addressed is ‘What is causing the inflammation?’.  In order to figure this out you will need to get a comprehensive assessment of multiple systems in your body and many times run some advanced lab testing to uncover the source.  The sources typically fall into one of four categories:

  • Foods:  processed foods, inflammatory oils, food sensitivities, food allergies, etc. 
  • Bugs: bacteria, viruses, parasites, etc.
  • Chemicals: found in foods, the environment, household products, hygiene products, mold byproducts, etc.
  • Chronic stress: heightened stress levels that never turn off

Unfortunately, many healthcare providers do not ask enough questions about these areas when they see patients complaining of poor health.  Often times people are told that they need to just lose weight by eating better and exercising.  While both of these are very important to optimal health it is unfair to just send people home without giving them some clear direction or options to further explore their weight gain or other symptoms.  This is especially true for those patients who are already following a seemingly healthy diet and consistently working out.
